The term "sock" is probably the most used insult on the forum in front of 'liberal" and "twat". However what really is a sock?

A sock is an "alter ego" of the sockmaster created for one of two purposes:

1) to support the sockmaster in his/her discussions/arguments or vote for or against stories,

2) to enable the sockmaster to express the opposite to his/her usual views for the express purpose of deceiving the forum, ie "Good cop, bad cop".

It therefore becomes evident that the term "sock" does NOT apply in the following cases:

1) where a member has been banned and returns under a different identity. This may be classified as "deception" but either the member carries on in the same vein and is soon found out or they change their style of posting and may never be outed. Maybe Diedre is back amongst us!

2) where a member has had a bad experience and has reinvented themselves, abandoning their previous identity. We can all learn from mistakes,

3) where a member creates different identities for different forums. To be a sock one has to interact with either the sockmaster or another sock.

Therefore before you start to call someone a sock remember it takes two to tango - a sockmaster and a sock.

 

And then we have the internet trolls.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted".


While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions and harassment outside of an online context. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[5][6]

I wind up dealing with many trolls on other sights I deal with; they are annoying to no end. Mind you, on the expression of 'annoying' is the least polite word I use to describe them.
